Sassufie Nicolas Obituary

Obituary

On March 15, 1951 an angel came to earth in the form of Sassufie Nicolas. She was born to the late Nicolas Paul and Viergela Jean Louis. She was the third of their six children born in Desdunes, Haiti. After her mother passed away, she worked the farmland and rice fields for her aunt Lamercie Nicolas. She used her money and entrepreneurial spirit to help raise her younger twin sisters and her brothers’ children (this earned her the nickname “Veye”) prior to immigrating to the United States.

Sassufie immigrated to America in 1982, where she lived with her brothers and their family. In 1986, she and Newton Florent welcomed her answered prayer her only child, “sel grin alimet” Sandra Florent. Throughout her life she worked various jobs from live-in nanny, catering to factory work. For additional income she’d work as a reseller of supplements, bedding and houseware. At age 62, she retired and she built her dream home in Deudunes where her heart resides, she spilt her time between there and the U.S. As a single mom, Sassufie dedicated her life to raising her daughter to be strong, independent, family oriented, and God fearing just like her.

In the early 2000s she converted from Catholicism to Pentecostal. She started her journey at Haitian Church of Christ of the Fellowship under the leadership of the late Rev. Pierre Paul and Sr. Paul Ambroise. Thereafter, under the leadership of Bishop Himrod Ambrosie she continued to serve as a Deaconess, usher, choir member, and more. With a heart for service, she took it upon herself to provide the ceremonial items for handwashing during communion services as member of New Bethany Haitian Baptist Church under the leadership Pastor Metelus. At the time of her passing she was a member of Mount Horeb Church Assembly of God. Even in Haiti she had a local church home, she even donated a generator to them. Sassufie had heart for people, enjoyed cooking and loved make people laugh. When you were in her presence, she made you feel like you were the only person that mattered. Though she may have only birthed one child she was a mother figure and surrogate mom to many.

On May 23, 2021, (Pentecost Sunday) Sassufie Nicolas was called home to be with the Lord. She leaves behind a host of family and friends who must now live with the void she has left behind:
