Marie H. Polynice (Carmen) was born in Port Au Prince, Haiti to parents Anna Louis and Clodomir Polynice on August 19, 1928. She attended school in Port Au Prince, and became a clothing designer while in Haiti.
She moved to Manhattan in 1969, where she worked and cared for the Neel family for over 50 yrs. Through her relationship with the Neel family, she was painted by Alice Neel in a portrait with her daughter Judy in 1972. This painting was currently featured at The Met within the “People Come First” exhibit, and is now being seen around the world.
Carmen had a personality that once you engaged in conversation with her you fell in love with who she was. She was always prepared to help family and friends. If you ever went to her apartment on W 102nd St., in Manhattan she was ready to serve you with a hot meal and great conversation. She loved to chat with her dear friend Monique Frederique, they could be on the phone for hours. Carmen, provided golden advice to everyone, she was the voice of reason for family and friends. She was a devoted Catholic who attended Holy Name of Jesus Church in Manhattan for over 40yrs. One of her prized pictures is having her feet washed by her Priest.
After a minor surgery four months ago, her health began to decline. She passed on November 3, 2021. She is now together with her parents, twin brother Carmille Polynice, sister Maude Polynice, husband Andre Gordon, and daughter Judy Gordon.
She is survived by her brother Pierre Polynice and wife Marlene, sister Andrelina Polynice-Doxy, brother Paul Polynice and wife Evelyn, and sister Josette Polynice – Isme. Her children Jacques “Mario” Gordon and wife Marie Lucie, Gerald Gordon and wife Mimose, Josue Gordon, Jael Gordon, and Emmanuel Gordon. She is loved by her grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of family and friends.
