Bernadette Dugue Obituary

BIOGRAPHY

“Precious in the Sight of the Lord is the Death of the Saints” Psalms 116:15

Among the few who lived up the full meaning of their names, Bernadette Dugué, née Saint-Fleur, made her way. Her light first glowed on September 20, 1939 and remained vibrant, steady, and glittering until she passed on April 10, 2019 for nearly 80 years of life. She was born to Christialine Cadet and Duversaint Saint-Fleur in Grande Riviere du Nord, a neighboring town of Cap Haitian, sitting miles northward of the Capital. Disciplined, religious, self-respect preserving, and family-oriented, Bernadette later married Arnold Dugue with whom she had three children Arnex, Adeline and Mirlande.

Gripped by the prospect of lasting mayhem, the overall ecological dismay in Haiti; and dreaming of better opportunities for her kids, Bernadette headed to North America on a journey that first landed in Canada for a few years before she finally settled in United States particularly in New Jersey. Without compromising her moral and spiritual values, Bernadette combined faith, hard – work, and determination to financially stabilize her status in the United States; and to bring her three kids under her own care. She raised them alone. Bernadette remained grateful to family’s matriarchal figures like Rose Larose Saint-Fleur, Junia Dieuveil, Roselette Almonor, and to Mrs. Gordon with whom she worked for years. Mrs. Gordon was instrumental in regularizing Bernadette’s status in the United States.

Having defied all odds, Bernadette put forth efforts studying and passing the nursing assistant exam in New York. Within capacity of such, she worked for more than two decades, providing for and meeting her family’s needs. Had she been born Jewish, she would have been named a Good Samaritan, so unique and proverbial is her compassion. Anyone who ever happened to visit or stopped by Bernadette’s home, would concur that she stood out of the crowd for her hospitality and generosity. On the internal walls of her hearts must have been written the first beatitude found in Matthew chapter 5: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Hard-working, independent, devoted Christian, loyal to her pastors, good cook, faithful in her tithes and offerings, Bernadette was born to be blessed and to bless others. Her children, grandchildren, friends and family members will be forever indebted to her loving, caring and giving attitude.

Bernadette’s life did not go unnoticed; she did live a good life; fight the good fight and she must be happy to be with the Lord. She is survived by: her son “Arnex Dugue; her daughters, Adeline Emile, Mirlande and husband Parnell Beaubrun; her brother Théodule and his wife Celine Saint-Fleur. Her grand kids: John, Khenny and Madline Emile; Schorlt and Pashmir Beaubrun. Her aunts: Junia Dieuveil and Rose Larose Saint-Fleur and her family. Her nephews: Hughes Theodule and his wife Clauda Saint-Fleur; Her nieces: Marie Carmelle, Florcie Jerome & husband and Florelle Saint-Fleur. Her numerous cousins from, Brunette Saint-Fleur, Counoune, Dr. Ary and Ronald Dieuveil; Julienne, Duchelot, Patrimoine and Mimose Pierre, Rose Junie Jasmine. Her numerous cousins, friends, and members of the Pierre, Cadet, Dugué, Saint-Fleur, Emile, Almonor, & Beaubrun families.

May her soul rest in peace.
